Your Journey Map
Six days. One ancient volcano. The climb of a lifetime.
Day 1
Journey to the Mountain
Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Settle into your private 4x4 vehicle and begin the scenic drive east to Mbale, the charming gateway town to Mount Elgon. The journey takes you through lush countryside, past sugar cane plantations, traditional villages, and stunning views of the mountain looming on the horizon. Stop for lunch along the way. Arrive in Mbale in the late afternoon. Check into your hotel, enjoy a delicious dinner, and attend a briefing about the climb ahead. Rest well—tomorrow, the mountain calls.
Day 2
Into the Bamboo
After an early breakfast, drive to the trailhead at Budadiri (1,250m). Meet your professional guide and porter team. Begin your ascent on the famous Sasa Trail—the shortest but steepest route to the summit. You will immediately immerse yourself in the cool, misty montane forest zone. The trail winds through dense vegetation, crossing streams and offering glimpses of the mountain's unique wildlife. After several hours of climbing, you will arrive at your camp near the soothing sounds of Simba Falls. Settle into your tent, enjoy a hot meal, and rest.
- • Meals: All meals included (packed lunch + dinner at camp)
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- • Elevation: 1,250m to 2,600m
Day 3
Above the Clouds
Wake to the sound of the falls. After breakfast, continue your ascent, passing through enchanting bamboo forests and entering the wide-open spaces of the moorlands. The terrain becomes more rugged, rewarding you with panoramic views and encounters with unique alpine flora—giant groundsels, lobelias, and heathers that grow nowhere else on earth. You will pass by cascading streams and winding rivers. Arrive at Sasa River Camp, your base for the night. Enjoy a hot dinner and rest. Tomorrow is summit day.
- • Meals: All meals included
- • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- • Elevation: 2,600m to 3,500m
Day 4
On Top of the Ancient One
This is the day you came for. Rise early—very early. After a light snack, begin the final, exhilarating push to the summit under a canopy of stars. The trail becomes steeper, the air thinner. Your guide will set a steady pace. After several hours of climbing, you will reach Wagagai Peak (4,321 meters)—the highest point on Mount Elgon. Celebrate your incredible achievement with sweeping 360-degree views across Uganda and Kenya. Take photos. Breathe it in. You have conquered an ancient volcano. After soaking in the moment, you will descend back to Sasa River Camp for a well-deserved rest.

The Journey Down
After breakfast, begin your descent through the trail, taking time to soak in the scenery and reflect on your epic journey. The descent is easier on the lungs but harder on the knees. Take it slow. Enjoy the views you may have missed on the way up. Upon arrival at the trailhead, you will be transferred back to Mbale Resort Hotel. Here, you can enjoy a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and a celebratory farewell dinner.
- • Meals: All meals included (breakfast, packed lunch, dinner at hotel)
- • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours (descent)
Day 6

Why Climbers Choose the Sasa Trail
🏔️
East Africa's Oldest Volcano
Mount Elgon is over 24 million years old—the oldest volcanic massif in East Africa. Its unique ecosystems, giant lobelias, and ancient caves are unlike anything on Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya.
🚶
The Sasa Trail – Short & Steep
The Sasa Trail is the shortest route to Wagagai Peak, making it perfect for climbers with limited time. It is steep, challenging, and rewarding—with diverse scenery from bamboo forests to alpine moorlands.
🌿
Away from the Crowds
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Elgon sees only a fraction of the climbers. You will have the mountain almost to yourself—no queues, no crowds, just you and the wild.
